Patna, February 19: The political landscape in Bihar is heating up as both the NDA and the Grand Alliance grapple with the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections for five seats. Akhtarul Iman, the state president of AIMIM, announced on Thursday that his party will field its own candidate rather than support another party.
AIMIM is poised to play a significant role in this election, backed by five legislators. During a media interaction, Iman expressed frustration over questions regarding support for other candidates.
He stated, “Was I born just to provide support? Why don’t you ask who will support me? Other parties have representation in the Rajya Sabha, but AIMIM does not. We want to establish our presence.”
Iman further urged those who oppose the divisive government and wish to protect the interests of Dalits to strengthen the hands of Asaduddin Owaisi.
In Bihar’s 243-member assembly, a candidate needs the support of 41 legislators to win. Currently, the NDA holds 202 seats, which positions them to easily secure four seats. However, to win a fifth seat, they will require support from additional legislators if the competition intensifies. The opposition, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal, forms the Grand Alliance.
The Grand Alliance has a total of 35 legislators and will also need support from others to secure a seat. Meanwhile, AIMIM’s five legislators and one from the Bahujan Samaj Party are not aligned with any coalition.
