Kerala Chief Minister Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

Thiruvananthapuram, March 3: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the Israel-US and Iran conflict, Kerala is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents abroad, particularly those in Gulf countries.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired an online meeting on Tuesday night with representatives from the Gulf region, emphasizing that the safety of Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) is the state government’s top priority.

Highlighting the need for unity, he stated that it is essential for those abroad to set aside differences and work together during this time.

Vijayan expressed satisfaction with the mixed responses received from the Malayali diaspora, despite ongoing concerns regarding the changing security situation in the region.

The state has formally alerted the central government about the necessity to ensure the safety of Indian nationals abroad and to facilitate travel for those needing to return immediately.

Vijayan assured, “Kerala will provide all possible assistance within its jurisdiction.”

Key concerns raised with the central government include flight cancellations, delays in refunds, exorbitant ticket prices, the possibility of chartered services, and the plight of transit passengers stranded at Gulf airports.

The Chief Minister also pointed out the deep trade and commercial ties between India and Gulf countries, warning that prolonged instability could have economic repercussions in the country, affecting livelihoods and supply chains in Kerala.

Representatives at the meeting acknowledged the clear concerns regarding the conflict but noted that conditions in their respective countries remain calm, with no atmosphere of panic currently.

However, they emphasized practical challenges, such as the need for emergency travel for those abroad, students returning home for exams, passengers stranded due to canceled flights, and individuals stuck on transit visas.

The Chief Minister urged those abroad to strictly follow the advice issued by local authorities and Indian embassies and to refrain from spreading or acting on unverified information.

He reassured that the state will intervene wherever possible to alleviate the difficulties faced by Keralites abroad during this crisis.
