New Delhi, May 2: Congress MP Manikkam Tagore has dismissed the reliability of exit polls, stating that the true mandate of the people will only be clear on counting day.
He remarked, “I do not trust exit polls. Wait for the actual counting on the 4th. The people have already made their decision. The public has given their mandate, and it should be presented correctly. Therefore, let’s wait for the next 48 hours. There should be no tampering with the people’s mandate.”
His comments come amid a highly divided exit poll scenario in Tamil Nadu, where different agencies have predicted varying outcomes for major political parties.
The competition in the state is seen as a contest among three main factions: the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP coalition, and actor Vijay’s TVK.
Among the predictions, the Axis My India survey has drawn attention by forecasting a surprising first win for TVK, estimating between 98 to 120 seats. Meanwhile, the DMK is projected to secure 92 to 110 seats, and the AIADMK is expected to gain 22 to 32 seats, reflecting an unusually divided prediction landscape for this election.
Polling in Tamil Nadu took place on April 24, with a high voter turnout of 85.13%. The DMK focused its campaign on the ‘Dravidian model’ and welfare schemes, while the AIADMK promised corruption-free governance and an end to “family rule.”
In West Bengal, assembly elections were held in two phases on April 24 and 29, with results for both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal set to be counted on May 4.
Re-polling is taking place at 15 polling stations in the South 24 Parganas district, including 11 in Magrahat West and 4 in Diamond Harbour. Voting began at 7 AM and continued until 6 PM. Voters in the Diamond Harbour area have given mixed responses, but most acknowledged improved arrangements and tight security during the re-polling.
