Beijing, May 2: China assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on May 1. Fu Cong, the permanent Chinese representative to the UN, stated during a news briefing that the Security Council will focus on three major issues this month.
Firstly, the aim is to restore the reputation of the UN Charter and enhance the role of the UN. Secondly, efforts will be made to promote a political resolution to the Middle East issue. Lastly, there will be support for the stability and development of African nations.
Fu Cong noted that recent years have seen increasing turmoil in the international situation. Conflicts and confrontations are on the rise, severely impacting the multilateral system and international law. The international community must take steps to elevate the reputation of the UN Charter and the role of the UN. The Security Council will hold a high-level open debate this month to reaffirm the core mission of the UN Charter and protect the achievements of World War II, while restoring the UN’s central role in the international order.
Additionally, Fu Cong mentioned that the Security Council will regularly review various issues, including those related to Israel-Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria. Furthermore, China will urge the Security Council to maintain its focus on Africa.
He also emphasized that the UN is at a critical juncture. The international community needs a strong Secretary-General who is fully committed to enhancing multilateralism and the role of the UN.
