India to Host the First International Big Cat Alliance Summit on June 1, 2026

New Delhi, May 12: The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026 will take place on June 1 in New Delhi, as announced by Dr. S.P. Yadav, the Director General of IBCA. This summit marks the first of its kind and will welcome representatives from 95 countries that are home to big cats. Additionally, 25 IBCA members and observers, along with heads of state and government leaders, will also be in attendance.

Dr. Yadav emphasized the importance of the summit’s theme: “Save Big Cats, Save Ecosystems, Save Humanity.” He explained that there are seven big cat species globally—tiger, cheetah, leopard, snow leopard, jaguar, puma, and lion. Protecting these big cats is crucial for preserving their habitats and ecosystems, which ultimately benefits humanity.

He further elaborated on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the IBCA, stating that these majestic animals represent ecosystems and habitats worldwide. Over 50 million square kilometers of forest area serve as their habitat, rich in biodiversity. Thus, protecting big cats is essential for safeguarding biodiversity and mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration. Local communities can also find livelihood options through eco-tourism and environmental development initiatives.

Dr. Yadav noted that among the 95 countries involved, 92 are located in the Global South. This provides an excellent platform for leadership through IBCA, promoting big cat diplomacy and soft diplomacy, collectively termed green diplomacy.

The IBCA aims to enhance international cooperation for the conservation of the seven big cat species, facilitate knowledge exchange regarding threats and solutions, and build capacity for effective management in their distribution areas. It also seeks to raise global awareness and promote advocacy activities, while exploring opportunities for collaboration with international conservation bodies.

The formation of IBCA was a response to the urgent need for a global collaborative approach to protect these magnificent creatures. By uniting various countries, conservation partners, and scientific organizations, the alliance stands as a united front against the looming threats to big cats. It exemplifies the power of international cooperation in preserving our planet’s natural heritage for future generations.
