Ahmedabad, March 7: The T20 World Cup 2026 final is set to take place this Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, featuring a thrilling match between India and New Zealand. Jasprit Bumrah, who played a crucial role in India’s semi-final victory with his exceptional bowling, could again be a game-changer in the final. However, the New Zealand team is cautious about overhyping him.
New Zealand’s explosive batsman, Glenn Phillips, believes that Bumrah is human and can have an off day, just like anyone else. “We hope to have a good day against him,” Phillips stated. He noted that while they performed well against Bumrah in their bilateral series, he remains a class bowler with a plethora of options. “He is particularly dangerous in the death overs,” he added.
Phillips pointed out that teams often adopt a defensive approach against Bumrah while being more aggressive against other Indian bowlers. Their strategy usually involves minimizing wickets against him. He recalled how England’s Jacob Bethel and Sam Curran faced a similar fate, paying a heavy price for their cautious tactics. In Bumrah’s last two overs, only 14 runs were scored, and England lost the match by just 7 runs. “Had they managed to hit a few boundaries in those overs, the outcome might have been different,” he remarked.
The dynamic player emphasized that it’s not that Bumrah bowled poorly in those overs; rather, teams often refrain from attacking him out of respect or fear. However, he assured that his team would not adopt a defensive stance against Bumrah in the final.
In the semi-final, England needed 69 runs in the last five overs. Bumrah bowled the 16th and 18th overs, conceding just 14 runs. Consequently, England was left needing 30 runs in the final over, and India clinched the match by 7 runs.
