Washington, May 19: A tragic shooting occurred at a mosque in San Diego, California, on Monday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a security guard. President Donald Trump expressed his sorrow over the incident, labeling it horrific. The shooting, which took place in the morning, has been marked as the fourth major gun-related incident in the United States this year.
According to police reports, the two suspects involved in the shooting were teenagers, aged 17 and 19. Their bodies were discovered in a vehicle near the mosque, and initial investigations suggest they may have taken their own lives.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime, although further details regarding the motive have not yet been disclosed.
In a statement to reporters, Trump remarked, “This is an extremely serious and tragic situation. I have been briefed on the initial information, but we will take this matter very seriously.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the FBI is conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting.
The attack took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, which also houses a school that teaches Arabic, Islamic studies, and the Quran to children.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed solidarity with the Muslim community, stating, “California stands with you. An attack in a place where families and children gather, where people worship peacefully, is truly horrifying. There is no place for hate in California.”
He also mentioned that teams from the California Highway Patrol and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services are coordinating with local authorities at the scene.
This incident highlights the alarming trend of gun violence in the U.S. Earlier this year, on April 19, a shocking event in Shreveport, Louisiana, saw a man kill eight children, seven of whom were his own.
Additionally, on February 16, a shooting during a high school hockey match in Rhode Island resulted in three fatalities, including the shooter. Just a week into the new year, on January 8, a woman was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis; she was identified as 37-year-old Renee Good, a mother of three.
