Internal Revolt Erupts Against Vijayan After CPI(M) Defeat in Kerala Elections

Thiruvananthapuram, May 19: The recent defeat of the CPI(M) in the Kerala Assembly elections has sparked an unprecedented internal revolt against Chief Minister P. Vijayan and state secretary M.V. Govindan. District committees, senior leaders, and grassroots workers are openly demanding accountability, a change in leadership, and a complete political overhaul within the party.

Meetings across the state, from Alappuzha to Kannur, which once reflected unwavering loyalty to Vijayan, have transformed into platforms for sharp criticism.

Both leaders and workers have attributed the party’s embarrassing loss to factors they describe as arrogance, a personality-driven approach, and a leadership style that has alienated the general public and even party activists.

During a meeting at the Alappuzha district secretariat, attended by senior leaders like Thomas Isaac and Saji Cherian, pointed questions were raised about why Vijayan continues to receive extraordinary security and protection despite the electoral defeat.

Members have called for his resignation from the position of opposition leader and criticized the decision to field M.V. Govindan’s wife, P.K. Shyamala, from Taliparamba, where she faced a significant defeat.

In Kannur, the discontent was even more pronounced, with discussions in the district committee revealing fierce criticism of the top leadership. Activists openly accused the leadership of distancing the party from the public through their confrontational and rigid politics.

The losses in Taliparamba and Payyanur, long-standing strongholds of the CPI(M), have further shaken the party’s foundation.

Allegations have also emerged that the special inquiry commission announced by the leadership aims more to divert public anger than to identify genuine shortcomings, particularly targeting dissenters like senior leader P. Jayarajan.

This growing revolt within the party has begun to resonate on a national level. Politburo member Viju Krishnan openly questioned Vijayan’s continued position as opposition leader during an online Politburo meeting, arguing that the defeat in Kerala is a direct result of leadership failure.

His stance has garnered substantial support from party workers, many of whom are calling for a special session in Kerala and discussions on the removal of M.V. Govindan from his position.

Increasing pressure on the leadership has led central committee member P.K. Shrimati to publicly label the defeat as disgraceful and humiliating. Her comments are widely viewed as a direct attack on the Vijayan-Govindan faction.
