New Delhi, May 19: The Delhi High Court held a hearing on the excise policy case on Tuesday. During the proceedings, the court issued contempt notices against former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, MP Sanjay Singh, former minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, Vinay Mishra, and Durgesh Pathak.
The court has instructed all leaders to submit their responses within four weeks. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for August 4.
No representatives from these leaders appeared in court during the hearing. The court directed the registry to preserve all records related to social media and include them in the court’s records. Additionally, the court announced that an amicus curiae would be appointed for this case.
It is noteworthy that on May 14, the court initiated criminal contempt proceedings against Kejriwal and several other party leaders. The court determined that a coordinated campaign was launched to tarnish the judiciary in connection with the excise policy case.
Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma issued a detailed order stating that when he refused to recuse himself from the case, social media posts, videos, and public statements were made against him, crossing the line between fair criticism and criminal contempt.
The judge remarked that the concerned parties could have approached the Supreme Court. Instead, they chose to publicly disseminate letters and videos alleging political bias, suggesting that justice could not be expected from this court. According to the Delhi High Court, this attitude was an attempt to instill distrust in the judiciary among the public, which could lead to chaos if not curtailed.
In light of the contempt proceedings, Justice Sharma also recused himself from further hearings in the excise policy case.
