Ahmedabad Crime Branch Arrests Employee in ₹1.66 Crore Gold Theft Case

Ahmedabad, May 19: Authorities reported on Tuesday that the Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a female employee in connection with the alleged theft of gold jewelry worth over ₹1.66 crore from a jewelry store in the Nikol area of Gujarat.

According to a police officer, a complaint was filed at the Nikol police station after gold jewelry valued at ₹1,66,88,437 was reported stolen from ‘Abhushan Jewelers’ located in the Gravity Shopping Mall on May 11.

The accused has been identified as 38-year-old Harshida Shetty, who was working at the store at the time of the incident.

Following the complaint, the Crime Branch formed several teams to track down the suspect. During the investigation, officials reviewed footage from nearly 300 CCTV cameras and utilized human intelligence to gather information.

The suspect was located and subsequently arrested. During the operation, jewelry and other stolen items worth ₹22,54,500 were recovered.

During interrogation, police revealed that the accused allegedly conspired with an accomplice identified as Mayur Mali to plan the theft.

According to the alleged plan, after the incident, the stolen gold jewelry was taken, and both attempted to flee Gujarat. They traveled by motorcycle from Ahmedabad to Udaipur and then headed towards Jaipur and Delhi.

Investigators further disclosed that while staying at a hotel, the co-accused reportedly abandoned the woman and fled with the stolen gold.

Police have recovered several pieces of jewelry from the suspect, including a gold bracelet worth ₹9.98 lakh, a gold ring adorned with white stones and an eagle design valued at ₹1.34 lakh, a gold mangalsutra worth ₹7.43 lakh, and a gold chain valued at ₹3.62 lakh.

A mobile phone was also recovered from her possession. The case has been registered under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The arrested suspect has been handed over to the Nikol police station for further legal action.

Efforts to locate the absconding accomplice are ongoing; he is reportedly from the Vastrapur area.

Police stated that further investigations are underway to recover the remaining stolen valuables and to trace the entire sequence of events related to the alleged crime.
