Bengaluru, April 25: A controversy surrounding the forced removal of the sacred thread (Janeu) from students at a Common Entrance Test (CET) center has escalated in Chikkaballapur district, igniting protests and outrage among various community groups.
The issue intensified on Friday when students at a CET center in Bengaluru were allegedly compelled to remove their Janeu. A police complaint has been filed, and the Bharatiya Janata Party is demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Another incident emerged from the Nagarjuna College exam center near Doddamarali, where a student named G. Suprit was reportedly asked to remove his Janeu before being allowed to sit for the exam.
This allegation has raised serious concerns about interference with religious practices. The matter came to light three days after the incident, leading to widespread anger among the public.
Various organizations have now taken a stand against the college management and exam staff, demanding accountability. Members of the Brahmin Mahasabha in Chikkaballapur have contacted the Superintendent of Police and are considering filing a formal complaint condemning the incident.
They are calling for strict action against the college officials involved. This event has drawn particular attention as it occurred in the home district of Higher Education Minister M.C.
Parents of the affected student and community leaders have expressed strong discontent, alleging that religious sentiments are being hurt under the guise of exam regulations.
It is worth noting that following the uproar over the removal of Janeu at a CET center, three staff members from Kripanidhi College in Bengaluru were suspended on the orders of the Karnataka Congress government.
The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has written to the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner, requesting an investigation into the incident and appropriate action.
Despite clear instructions not to remove the Janeu, the incident raises suspicions that it may have been a deliberate act aimed at sowing discord.
In the meantime, three staff members from Kripanidhi College, including two senior female employees, have been suspended in connection with these allegations.
The Janeu, or Yajnopavita, is a sacred thread worn by Hindu males, particularly Brahmins, over their left shoulder and under their right arm. It symbolizes education, spiritual life, and the transition to adulthood.
The ‘Janeu controversy’ resurfaced in Koramangala, Karnataka, when a student taking the CET was asked to remove his sacred thread before entering the exam hall.
