New Delhi – Great news for millions of Indian households and vehicle owners using CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and PNG (Piped Natural Gas). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has officially approved a new unified tariff regulation, which is set to significantly reduce the prices of CNG and PNG in various parts of the country. The new regulation is expected to be notified within the next 2–3 days, and the benefits will start rolling out shortly after.

This policy shift is a strategic move aimed at making clean energy more accessible and affordable, especially in remote and non-metro areas.

Unified Tariff: What Will Change?

Under the earlier model, gas prices were based on the distance between the gas source and the distribution network. This meant consumers in far-flung or remote areas paid significantly more for the same gas compared to metro cities like Delhi.

The new unified tariff regulation simplifies the structure by reducing the number of tariff zones from three to two, thereby bringing uniformity in gas pricing across several regions.

For example, prices in Delhi and Ghaziabad are expected to become nearly identical, removing the long-standing disparity caused by distance-based charges.

Lower Prices in Remote Areas

With the new regulation, CNG and PNG will now be more affordable even in distant towns and cities, which previously bore the brunt of high delivery charges. To further support distribution in remote regions, PNGRB plans to offer incentives to operators who extend infrastructure and pipeline connectivity to under-served areas.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader Clean Energy Goals and the Common Minimum Programme for a gas-based economy.

National Targets by 2030

In line with India’s clean energy roadmap, the government has set ambitious targets:

  • 120 million household PNG connections by 2030

  • 17,500 CNG stations across the country

The new unified tariff policy is expected to play a critical role in achieving these goals by improving affordability and infrastructure in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Key Takeaways for Consumers

  • CNG-PNG prices will reduce in many cities, especially those located far from supply sources

  • Unified tariff structure will ensure more consistent and predictable pricing

  • Incentives for gas distributors in remote areas to ensure deeper network penetration

  • Consumers in remote towns and cities can expect lower bills in the coming weeks

This move is a strong push toward affordable clean energy for all and could give a major boost to green mobility and clean cooking fuel adoption in rural and semi-urban India.
