Chennai, May 23: Following the NDA’s defeat in Tamil Nadu, there are indications of potential leadership changes within the state BJP unit. Speculations intensified after state president Nainar Nagendran departed for Delhi late last night.
Nagendran participated in a crucial state core committee meeting on Friday to review the party’s disappointing performance in the assembly elections. Just hours after the meeting, he headed to Delhi. Party sources revealed that he attempted to secure a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, making this visit politically significant.
The state core committee meeting was chaired by BJP National General Secretary (Organization) B.L. Santhosh. The discussions covered the electoral defeat and various organizational issues in detail. Senior leaders reportedly reviewed shortcomings in the campaign during the assembly elections, grassroots coordination, and the operational dynamics of the alliance with AIADMK.
Insiders within the party noted that the electoral loss has raised questions about the functioning of the state leadership. A faction within the BJP has been persistently pressuring for organizational changes.
A senior BJP leader stated, “The core committee conducted a thorough review of the defeat and discussed several issues related to the organization’s functioning. There is pressure from certain quarters within the party for a leadership change, and the central leadership is closely monitoring these developments.”
Sources indicate that the name of former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has resurfaced in internal discussions, with his supporters advocating for his return to a significant organizational role. However, party leaders have suggested that while discussions on leadership changes are ongoing, no immediate decisions are expected. The central leadership is carefully considering aspects of organizational stability and political messaging before making any final decisions.
