Congress Criticizes Government Over Rising Fuel Prices Amid Economic Concerns

New Delhi, May 23: The opposition has intensified its criticism of the government following the third increase in petrol and diesel prices in just ten days. The Congress party has accused the government of prioritizing the profits of oil companies over the welfare of the public.

On Saturday, the Congress party posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “The ‘Inflation Man’ Modi has raised petrol and diesel prices by ₹5 in just nine days. Today, petrol has increased by ₹0.94 and diesel by ₹0.95. The government is only concerned about the profits of oil companies. While governments worldwide are providing relief to their citizens, this government is exploiting the public.”

Continuing its attack, Congress urged, “When will you think about the welfare of the people? How long will you continue to benefit capitalists?”

Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale remarked, “This is the third increase in petrol and diesel prices in ten days. Fuel prices rise by nearly ₹1 every three days. The government is unable to manage the falling rupee, so expect prices to continue rising every few days at least until July.”

In his post on ‘X’, he added, “We do not need the façade of cutting expenses by the Prime Minister and ministers for the cameras. We need a government that understands the fundamental ways to run the economy and focuses on governance rather than public relations.”

It is noteworthy that government oil companies raised petrol prices by ₹0.87 per liter and diesel by ₹0.91 per liter on Saturday. In total, prices have surged by approximately ₹5 per liter over the past ten days. Following this increase, petrol prices in the national capital have reached ₹99.51 per liter, while diesel is priced at ₹92.49 per liter.

This marks the third increase in fuel prices within ten days. On May 15, prices were raised by ₹3 per liter, followed by an increase of over ₹0.80 on May 19. After these adjustments, petrol prices reached ₹98.64 per liter, and diesel prices hit ₹91.58 per liter.
