This revered Sikh shrine is located at an elevation of approximately 15,200 feet (4,632 meters) above sea level, surrounded by seven majestic glacial peaks and a frozen lake. The importance of the Gurudwara is underscored by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who mentioned in his autobiography (Dasam Granth) that he performed intense penance at this very location in a previous life. Nearby, the mythical Lokpal Lakshman Temple is also situated, where, according to Hindu belief, Lakshman Ji meditated.
Due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall, Hemkund Sahib is accessible for only 5 to 6 months each year, typically from May/June to October. Currently, as summer prevails, it is an ideal time to visit, especially as many regions in North India are grappling with intense heat.
