Pune, May 29: A disturbing incident has emerged involving a female employee of the Pune Municipal Corporation who was attacked while conducting the 2027 census in Maharashtra.
Reports indicate that while gathering information door-to-door, the employee and her colleagues faced rude behavior. The following day, the woman and her son were brutally assaulted. The victim alleges that the attackers tore her clothes, obstructed her official duties, and even threatened her life.
The case has been registered at the Swargate police station. According to police, the complainant, Vanita Gorakhnath Patole, 48, works as an attendant at the Bibvewadi regional office of the Pune Municipal Corporation. She was assigned to survey the Meenatai Thackeray slum area in Swargate as part of the census.
On May 27, between 3 PM and 4:30 PM, Vanita was working in lane number 14 of the Meenatai Thackeray slum. During this time, she encountered Vikas Navnath More, his wife Kranti More, sister Mukta Kasbe, mother Lilavati More, and nephew Abhijit More, who behaved rudely and obstructed her official work.
Vanita claims that when she asked questions related to the census, the accused became angry and began to verbally abuse her. She also reported receiving threats on the same day.
On May 28, Vanita returned to the area with her son and other employees to complete the unfinished census work, but another dispute arose. As tensions escalated, they attempted to leave, but the accused summoned more individuals to attack them.
According to the victim, a group of 10 to 12 people surrounded her and her son, launching a violent assault with kicks, stones, and fists. She alleges that they were brutally beaten and that her son sustained serious injuries requiring four stitches.
In an interview, Vanita stated, “I was merely fulfilling my duty. I had no personal dispute with anyone. Yet, my son and I were viciously attacked. We were pursued and assaulted. My clothes were torn, my sari was pulled, and I was humiliated. They also attempted to snatch my mobile phone, watch, and necklace.”
She added, “The employees accompanying me were also beaten. This was my first visit to that house for census work. I don’t understand why I was attacked. I seek justice.”
Following the complaint, the Swargate police have filed a case against Vikas Navnath More, Kranti Vikas More, Mukta Rajabhau Kasbe, Lilavati Navnath More, and Abhijit Shridhar More, among others.
Senior Inspector Yashwant Nikam of the Swargate police station stated, “An incident of assault against a female employee occurred during the census work. Legal action will be taken against the accused. There is a need to raise awareness about the census in slum areas. Wherever employees require police assistance, full cooperation will be provided.” The police are currently investigating the matter further.
