Tragic Deaths from Toxic Alcohol in Pune Spark Outrage and Demands for Prohibition

Pune, May 29: In a shocking incident in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune, over 12 people have died after consuming toxic alcohol. This tragedy has instilled fear and anger among local residents. Witnesses report that many individuals fell seriously ill shortly after drinking, leading to a series of fatalities.

Authorities have acted swiftly, arresting four suspects identified as Yogesh Wankhede, Radheshyam Prajapati, Mirka Singh, and Guru Mangal Singh. They were presented in Pimpri Court, where they were remanded to police custody until June 8. Investigators are now working to trace the source of the toxic alcohol and identify all parties involved.

A family member of one of the deceased shared, “Baba Sheikh and his friend Akbar Pathan often drank together. The family had no idea their condition could become so dire. When Baba Sheikh fell ill, we thought it was a common ailment, but at the hospital, we learned he had consumed a dangerous amount of alcohol, with nearly a liter extracted from his stomach. Initially, doctors suggested other causes, leaving the family confused. Sadly, Baba Sheikh passed away.”

They added that the family initially suspected a natural death, but when Akbar Pathan fell ill in a similar manner the next day, their suspicions deepened. Both men exhibited similar symptoms, including foaming at the mouth. Reports soon emerged that 10 to 12 others in the Fugewadi area had also succumbed under similar circumstances.

This heartbreaking incident has shattered many families. Homes that once had breadwinners are now filled with grief and silence. The greatest concern is for the future of young children who have lost their fathers. Families are calling on the administration not only to conduct an investigation but also to take stringent measures to permanently shut down such illegal operations.

Local resident Usha Sathe expressed, “A tragedy of this magnitude has struck our small community. Who do we turn to for comfort? The government allowed this to happen and has left it unchecked. There must be a ban on alcohol, as it is the root cause of these problems. It is destroying families.”
