New Delhi, May 29: A meeting of the Global Governance Friends Group was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 28. Representatives from over 60 countries, including foreign ministers from China, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, and Zimbabwe, attended the event.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a keynote address, presenting five key agreements reached among member countries aimed at improving and enhancing the global governance system since the group’s establishment.
In his speech, Wang Yi highlighted President Xi Jinping’s proposal for a global governance initiative introduced last September. This initiative emphasizes five core concepts: sovereign equality, the rule of international law, multilateralism, people-centeredness, and an action-oriented approach. Currently, nearly 160 countries and international organizations support this initiative. The Global Governance Friends Group has been established in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, comprising over 60 member countries.
Wang Yi stressed that China proposes nine guidelines to enhance and improve the global governance system: first, promoting reforms and efficiency within the United Nations; second, enhancing the authority and capacity of the Security Council; third, promoting peacekeeping operations in line with evolving circumstances; fourth, achieving international consensus to accelerate development; fifth, correcting the direction of international human rights governance; sixth, deepening reforms in the economic and financial system; seventh, establishing regulations for managing artificial intelligence; eighth, strengthening governance in new areas such as cyberspace and outer space; and ninth, promoting inclusivity and mutual learning through exchanges between civilizations.
Additionally, Wang Yi presented five major agreements reached among member countries regarding the improvement and effectiveness of the global governance system since the group’s inception. First, all parties advocate for the democratization of international relations, asserting that all countries, regardless of size, power, or wealth, should have the right to independently choose their social systems and development paths, and participate equally in the global governance process, making decisions and reaping benefits.
Second, all parties support maintaining the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensuring equal and uniform application of international laws and rules, and opposing double standards and imposition of rules on others.
Third, all parties advocate for maintaining the central role of the United Nations, practicing multilateralism, strengthening multilateral mechanisms, and opposing unilateralism and power politics.
Fourth, all parties support improving global governance through reforms, gradually reducing the North-South divide, and ensuring that the fruits of development benefit all people without leaving any country behind.
Fifth, all parties advocate for taking concrete actions to address the most pressing practical issues of concern to the international community, achieving visible results, and ensuring that global governance meets the test of time and the people’s expectations.
According to Wang Yi, China will host the Xiong’an World Governance Forum this autumn. He expressed hope that in the Xiong’an New Area, known as the “City of the Future,” China will work with all parties to discuss plans for improving and enhancing global governance.
Representatives from participating countries praised and supported the global governance initiative, expressing hopes to strengthen solidarity and cooperation within the framework of the Global Governance Friends Group to jointly promote the establishment of a more just and equitable global governance system. A joint statement from the meeting was also released.
