New Delhi, May 29: A significant ruling has emerged for millions of government teachers across the country. The Supreme Court has clarified that passing the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) is now mandatory for teachers to remain in service or to secure promotions.
The court specified that candidates appointed as government teachers before 2009 must pass the TET. Additionally, it dismissed petitions from thousands of teachers seeking exemptions from this requirement.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court urged government teachers not to focus solely on job security. The bench emphasized that teachers should also prioritize providing quality education to their students alongside their job and future.
In a decision made in September 2025, the court had stated that passing the TET is essential for teachers to continue in their roles or to be promoted. Following this ruling, 65 petitions were filed in the Supreme Court requesting a review, including many from state government teachers’ organizations.
However, the court has provided some relief to millions of serving teachers by extending the deadline for passing the TET. The original deadline of August 31, 2027, has now been pushed to August 31, 2028. This extension offers a sigh of relief for those teachers who have yet to pass the TET, granting them an additional year to qualify.
It is noteworthy that the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has made the TET mandatory for government teachers nationwide to enhance the teaching system.
