New Delhi, 2 January: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticised the Madhya Pradesh BJP government over the deaths caused by consumption of contaminated water in Indore. He stated that instead of clean water, poison was distributed in Indore, while the administration remained in a deep slumber.

Rahul Gandhi questioned when action would be taken against the responsible officers and political leaders in this matter.

He emphasised that clean water is not a favour but a fundamental right to life. He held the BJP’s double-engine government, its careless administration, and insensitive leadership fully responsible for the tragedy.

On the social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “In Indore, poison was distributed instead of water, and the administration was in a deep slumber. Homes are mourning, the poor are helpless, and on top of that, arrogant statements from BJP leaders. Those whose stoves have gone out needed consolation, but the government served arrogance. People repeatedly complained about dirty, foul-smelling water, yet why was there no response?”

He further asked the state government, “How did sewage mix into drinking water? Why was the supply not stopped in time? When will action be taken against the responsible officers and leaders? These are not ‘empty’ questions — this is a demand for accountability. Clean water is not a favour, it is a right to life. For the killing of this right, the BJP’s double-engine, its careless administration, and insensitive leadership are fully responsible.”

Rahul Gandhi also said, “Madhya Pradesh has now become a hub of misgovernance – deaths due to cough syrup, rats in government hospitals killing children, and now deaths from drinking sewage-contaminated water. And whenever the poor die, Modi ji remains silent as always.”

It is reported that more than 10 people have died in Indore due to poisonous water, and many others are admitted to hospitals.
