Jabalpur, August 12 (H.S.) – The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued a stern warning to the Aviation Ministry and private airlines over the reduced number of flights and lack of direct connections from Jabalpur. A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf observed the matter during a hearing and cautioned that if services do not improve, Jabalpur Airport could be shut down. The court further stated that flights from Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior could also face suspension.
Airline representatives responded only by saying they were “considering” the issue. The court termed this attitude as serious negligence, remarking, “No work is being done, nor is there any effective correspondence. If this continues, we will close the airport.”
During the proceedings, the government repeated its earlier argument that emails had been sent to airlines and meetings held to increase flights from Jabalpur. However, when asked by the bench about the airlines’ responses, the government could not provide a concrete answer.
The court directed InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which operates IndiGo Airlines, to submit details of concrete steps taken to increase flights from Jabalpur. The company was also instructed to provide passenger data for those travelling from Jabalpur to Delhi and Mumbai via connecting flights, along with an affidavit stating whether shifting the afternoon flight to morning or evening is possible. This commercial data must be submitted to the court in a sealed envelope.
The bench further ordered the Additional Chief Secretary of the Aviation Department to file a detailed affidavit on steps taken so far to improve connectivity and increase flights from Jabalpur to major cities. He has also been directed to attend the next hearing via video conferencing.
The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for August 28, 2025.
