Guwahati, May 22: Ranjit Kumar Das was sworn in as the Speaker of the Assam Assembly for the second time on Thursday. He stated that he aims to conduct the proceedings of the house with the trust of both the ruling and opposition parties. Das emphasized the importance of addressing the hopes and issues of the public effectively within the assembly.
In a conversation with reporters after taking office, Das highlighted that maintaining impartiality and working with a humanistic and democratic approach will be his top priorities.
The senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) noted that the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has always addressed public issues with sensitivity and responsibility. He pledged to carry forward this spirit as the Speaker.
“We will work with the confidence of all opposition legislators. The hopes and aspirations of the people of Assam should find a rightful place in the assembly,” Das remarked.
He further stated that all public-related issues will be viewed from a human perspective in the coming days.
Recalling his long association with the media before entering politics, Das mentioned his previous experience with the North East Media Corporation (NEMC). He expressed that his background in journalism makes it easy for him to engage with the media.
“I have previously worked at NEMC, and my deep connection with the media means that communicating with journalists has never been difficult for me,” he said.
Das noted that whenever he addresses public gatherings, he remembers his former journalist colleagues, acknowledging the crucial role of media in strengthening democracy.
According to Das, the media is one of the key pillars of democracy, and without it, effectively communicating government plans and public issues to society is not feasible.
“The media continuously advances democratic dialogue. Without the media, we cannot reach the people with our message or the government’s work,” he stated.
Ranjit Kumar Das reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the dignity of the assembly and the democratic traditions while ensuring the smooth functioning of the house.
