Odisha Leaders Express Outrage Over Alleged Insult to President Murmu in West Bengal

Bhubaneswar, March 9: Leaders from Odisha have voiced their anger following an incident involving President Droupadi Murmu during her visit to Darjeeling, West Bengal. The controversy arose due to a change in the event venue and alleged breaches of protocol. West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing criticism, while the Odisha Congress state president has dismissed the President’s remarks as unnecessary.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took to social media to express that the recent events in Siliguri during President Murmu’s visit have deeply saddened the people of Odisha and the tribal community across India. He stated that the refusal to grant permission for the International Santhal Conclave and the sudden change of venues cannot be dismissed as mere “strategic issues.” Such actions raise serious concerns and send an unfortunate message when an event, where the President was the chief guest, is disrupted.

Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister Parvati Parida expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating that the insult to President Murmu is not just an affront to a woman but also undermines the dignity of her constitutional position. She emphasized that disrespect towards the President equates to disrespect towards the nation, the Constitution, and all citizens. Parida urged the women and citizens of West Bengal to reflect on how they tolerate such behavior from a leader lacking humanity and sensitivity towards women. She called for collective action against this disrespect.

Minister Rabi Narayan Naik condemned the treatment of the President by the West Bengal government, asserting that such behavior is not part of Indian culture. He criticized the absence of the Chief Minister and the cabinet during the President’s visit, stating that they should have been present.

Aishwarya Biswal, president of the Odisha BJP Mahila Morcha, described the alleged disrespect shown to President Murmu in Siliguri as “extremely unfortunate and insensitive.” She questioned the extent to which a Chief Minister could breach decorum and insult the President, highlighting that this behavior sends negative signals for the Republic.

BJP MP from Mayurbhanj, Naba Charan Majhi, expressed his dismay over the President’s insult, noting that preparations for the event had been underway for a month. He criticized the change of venue and the failure of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to adhere to protocol, labeling it an affront to women, the Republic, and the tribal community. He suggested that President’s rule should be imposed in West Bengal due to Banerjee’s overreach.

Bharat Chandra Patra, president of the SC Cell in Keonjhar, emphasized that the President’s position is the highest in India, and the lack of respect shown during her visit to West Bengal is unacceptable. He condemned the change of venue and the absence of the Chief Minister, calling it a reflection of her arrogance.

Shyam Sundar Nayak, secretary of the Adivasi Bhuiyan Cultural Organization, stated that the President is the highest citizen of India, and the actions of Mamata Banerjee were inappropriate. He condemned the breach of protocol and the absence of key officials during the President’s visit.

Kamala Kant Singh, president of the Adivasi Morcha, criticized Banerjee’s behavior and the changes made to the event. He called for accountability for such conduct.

Rajendra Kumar Nayak, secretary of the Adivasi Sounti Society, expressed strong condemnation of Banerjee’s treatment of the President, advocating for the dismissal of her government and the imposition of President’s rule.

PCC president Bhakta Charan Das responded to the alleged insult to President Murmu, stressing the need to uphold the dignity of the highest constitutional office and avoid politicizing the issue. He raised questions about the necessity of the President’s attendance at the event and emphasized that protocol should not be compromised.
