Dhaka, August 4 – Retired Lieutenant General M Harun-Ar-Rashid, former Chief of the Bangladesh Army, was found dead on Monday morning in a VIP room at the Chattogram Club. He was 75. His body was discovered around 10:00 AM, sparking an investigation into the cause of his death.

According to reports from The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner (South) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain stated that the former army chief had arrived in Chattogram from Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. He checked into a VIP room at the club around 4:00 PM, went out after an hour, and returned at approximately 10:45 PM.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim confirmed that Harun-Ar-Rashid was also the Chairman of Destiny Group (Destiny-2000 Limited), a company under scrutiny in legal proceedings. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday in connection with a case, but he failed to show up and did not respond to phone calls.
Police have begun an investigation and are being assisted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Destiny Group’s Managing Director Rafiqul Amin confirmed that Harun was due in court on Monday but had gone incommunicado. When his personal assistant was unable to reach him in the morning, the matter was reported to club officials, who then alerted the police.
Initial suspicions suggest the cause of death may be a brain haemorrhage. Harun-Ar-Rashid, a resident of Dhaka, had ancestral roots in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram.
His nephew Arish Ahmed Shah said that when his uncle failed to respond, the club staff knocked on the door and peered in through a window, finding him unconscious. Marine City Medical College & Hospital doctor and cousin of the deceased, Prof. Najibunnahar, said, “I rushed to the club after receiving the sad news. Initial signs suggest he may have suffered a stroke.”
Police have sent the body to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
