Thrissur, 4 January – A major fire broke out in the two-wheeler parking area near platform number 2 at Thrissur Railway Station on Sunday morning, destroying more than 200 motorcycles and scooters.
The blaze was first noticed around 6:45 AM and quickly spread across the parking lot, which usually accommodates over 500 two-wheelers daily. The presence of fuel in the parked vehicles is believed to have intensified the fire, causing extensive damage within minutes.
Fire and rescue teams responded promptly, deploying several fire tenders and working for about half an hour to bring the fire under control. Although the flames were extinguished, thick smoke lingered in the area, causing discomfort to passengers and railway staff.
Eyewitnesses reported that many vehicles were completely burnt while others suffered partial damage. Owners of the affected two-wheelers, many of whom use them for daily commuting, arrived at the scene to find their vehicles reduced to ashes. Authorities are currently assessing the exact number of vehicles damaged.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Officials stated a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine whether the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit, fuel leakage, or any other reason. CCTV footage from the railway station premises will play a crucial role in the inquiry.
Railway officials confirmed that train operations were not affected during the incident, and services continued as usual. Both railway and local authorities have assured vehicle owners that appropriate measures will be taken after the investigation concludes.
