Remembering Ram Lakshman: The Musical Legacy of a Bollywood Icon

Mumbai, May 21: Renowned composer Ram Lakshman, known for his work in films like “Maine Pyar Kiya,” “Hum Aapke Hain Koun,” and “Hum Saath-Saath Hain,” passed away on May 22, 2021.

Ram Lakshman’s real name was Vijay Kashinath Patil. He composed music for over 150 films in Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Marathi, gaining special recognition for his contributions to Rajshri Productions. His career began in Marathi cinema, thanks to Dada Kondke, after which he also worked on several Hindi films.

The name Ram Lakshman symbolizes a musical duo that thrived in the romantic and family genres during the 1980s and 1990s. The duo was primarily known for the hard work and talent of Lakshman, or Vijay Patil. Their melodies continue to resonate in the hearts of many. The other half of this duo, Ram, was Surendra.

Vijay Patil was born on September 16, 1942, in Nagpur. He developed a deep passion for music from a young age, receiving traditional training and learning to play various instruments, including the piano, accordion, and drums.

He made his entry into Hindi cinema in 1977 with the film “Agent Vinod.” However, tragedy struck when Surendra passed away shortly after. Vijay Patil continued to carry the Ram Lakshman brand forward under the name ‘Lakshman.’ The 1989 film “Maine Pyar Kiya” catapulted him to stardom overnight.

Starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, the film’s songs became anthems for the youth. Tracks like “Dil Deewana,” “Kabootar Ja Ja Ja,” “Aaja Shaam Hone Aayi,” “Maine Pyar Kiya,” and “Mere Sawalon Ka” are still popular at weddings and parties, with all 11 songs from the film becoming hits.

In 1994, “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!” was released, featuring iconic songs such as “Didi Tera Devar Deewana,” “Main Ni Main,” “Joote Do Paise Lo,” “Hum Aapke Hain Koun,” and “Wah Wah Ram Ji,” which captured the hearts of audiences nationwide. The 1999 film “Hum Saath-Saath Hain” further solidified their partnership’s legacy.

Ram Lakshman collaborated with legendary singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, and Kumar Sanu. Their music added charm to films like “100 Days,” “Patthar Ke Phool,” “Police Public,” and “Muskurahat.”

Vijay Patil preferred to stay out of the limelight, considering music his true identity. He breathed his last at the age of 79 on May 22, 2021, leaving a wave of sorrow in the wake of his passing.
