PM Modi Presents Unique Gifts Reflecting Indian Culture to Norways Leaders

New Delhi, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to India on Thursday after a five-nation tour. During this visit, he showcased India’s friendly relations with Norway through thoughtful gifts presented to the country’s top leadership, including the Prime Minister, King, Queen, and Crown Prince. These gifts exemplify India’s rich art, traditional craftsmanship, and cultural heritage.

During his trip to Norway, PM Modi gifted a ‘Pressed Orchid Painting’ and an ‘Orchid Paperweight’ to the Norwegian Prime Minister.

The Pressed Orchid Painting and Orchid Paperweight are exquisite artworks made from real pressed orchids and ferns found in the misty valleys of Sikkim. They symbolize the remarkable biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas. Each flower and fern has been meticulously selected and preserved by local artisans to capture the natural beauty of Sikkim for generations. This art from India’s first organic state reflects a deep respect for environmental conservation, balanced living, and traditional craftsmanship. Norway’s love for nature, sustainable lifestyles, and floral culture resonates beautifully with Sikkim’s orchid heritage.

PM Modi also brought a specially crafted ‘Intricately Carved Sailboat Model’ for the King of Norway.

This stunning silver sailboat is a prime example of Tarakashi art, a renowned silver filigree craft from Cuttack, Odisha, which is over 500 years old. This art form involves twisting and joining very thin silver wires to create intricate and beautiful designs, showcasing the incredible skill and dedication of artisans.

Handcrafted by skilled craftsmen, this sailboat serves as a reminder of Odisha’s rich maritime heritage and symbolizes the journeys of ancient Indian traders who sailed to distant lands. Norway’s maritime tradition, linked to the Vikings and a long history of exploration, shares a special connection with this gift. It is particularly meaningful as King Harald V has a lifelong passion for sailing and has represented Norway in the Olympics.

Additionally, PM Modi presented the Queen of Norway with a unique ‘Palm Leaf Patta Chitra.’

The ‘Palm Leaf Patta Chitra,’ known locally as Tala Patta Chitra, is one of Odisha’s oldest and most intricate art forms. Unlike fabric paintings, this art involves finely engraving images on specially prepared palm leaves. It is celebrated for its detail and beauty, often crafted into foldable panels or strips connected by threads. This art beautifully combines storytelling, writing, and traditional painting, reflecting the hard work and creativity of generations of artisans.

Norway’s cultural heritage, storytelling traditions, and love for nature-inspired art connect seamlessly with the Palm Leaf Patta Chitra. Just as Nordic manuscripts and folk art preserve culture with patience and craftsmanship, this art form keeps tradition and timeless beauty alive.

PM Modi also gifted a ‘Sun and Moon Themed Kalamkari Painting’ to the Crown Prince of Norway.

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form that involves hand painting or block printing. It tells stories and depicts traditional images using natural colors and intricate designs. Originating in Andhra Pradesh, it has developed two main styles over time: the Srikalahasti style, which uses a bamboo pen for hand painting, and the Machilipatnam style, which employs hand-carved wooden blocks.

The Sun and Moon Kalamkari Painting symbolizes balance and duality. The sun represents energy, vitality, and awareness, while the moon symbolizes peace, sensitivity, and depth of mind. Kalamkari is considered an important storytelling art linked to India’s Vedic traditions. The celestial symbols depicted evoke a universal appeal, reminiscent of Norway’s ‘Midnight Sun,’ where light and darkness blend beautifully.
