Mumbai, May 21: A violent clash occurred in the Bandra East area of Mumbai during a demolition drive on Wednesday. Local residents clashed with police, resulting in injuries to several officers. Following the incident, an FIR has been registered at the Nirmal Nagar police station against ten identified individuals and others who remain unknown.
According to police reports, the operation to remove illegal constructions was underway near the Bandra East railway station in the impoverished Nagar area on May 20. This action was conducted in compliance with a directive from the Mumbai High Court and was scheduled accordingly. The Mumbai police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Home Guards, and other personnel were deployed for security during the operation.
As the demolition began, a crowd of local residents gathered. The police made repeated announcements urging the crowd to maintain peace and vacate the area. However, the crowd began to chant slogans and attempted to obstruct the operation. The situation escalated, leading the crowd to throw stones and other objects at the police.
To control the situation, the police employed minimal force. Several officers were injured and received immediate medical assistance. The Nirmal Nagar police have filed an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including unlawful assembly, rioting, obstructing public servants from performing their duties, damaging government property, and assaulting public servants. Ten accused individuals have been identified, and a case has been registered against them.
Mumbai police stated, “The demolition drive was conducted entirely under legal procedures. Despite this, some anti-social elements deliberately incited violence and attacked police personnel. We are investigating this matter seriously. Based on CCTV footage and other evidence, all offenders will be identified and brought to justice.”
Currently, additional security forces have been deployed in the area. The police are analyzing CCTV footage and continue to search for other suspects involved in the incident.
