Guwahati, May 18: The fast-track court has reserved its judgment on the bail application of Shekharjyoti Goswami, an accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg. The court announced that it will deliver its order on May 28.
Shekharjyoti Goswami was part of Zubeen Garg’s band and had worked closely with him for many years. He has been in judicial custody for several months. Notably, he was not presented in court on Monday.
During the hearing, Goswami’s lawyer argued for his bail, citing the lengthy time he has spent in jail. In contrast, the government lawyer opposed the bail, stating that further investigation into this high-profile case is necessary, making it inappropriate to grant bail at this stage.
This case revolves around the death of Zubeen Garg, which occurred on September 19 last year while he was swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore. The incident took place just a day before he was scheduled to perform at an event organized under the NEIF banner.
Following the incident, the Assam Police CID formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The team conducted an extensive investigation and filed a charge sheet in December, naming seven individuals as accused, four of whom face murder charges.
The case has also garnered significant political attention. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the assembly, labeling the incident a clear case of murder, which further intensified media coverage.
Meanwhile, Singapore police conducted a separate investigation, concluding that there was no evidence of conspiracy in Zubeen Garg’s death. However, Assam’s investigative agencies clarified that the findings of the foreign investigation would not impact the ongoing state investigation and court proceedings.
Currently, this case remains a topic of ongoing discussion.
