Chennai, 3 January. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will formally inaugurate the Pongal Gift Hamper distribution scheme in Chennai on 8 January, according to official sources.
Ahead of the annual welfare programme, indications suggest that the state government may soon announce if there will be cash assistance along with the traditional Pongal gift package this year.
Pongal is celebrated across Tamil Nadu with great enthusiasm as a harvest festival, marked by cultural events and family gatherings. Every year, the state government distributes Pongal gift hampers through the Public Distribution System (PDS) to ensure that all sections of society can celebrate the festival with respect and joy.
This initiative has become a hallmark of the government’s festival-related welfare schemes. This year, the Tamil Nadu government plans to provide Pongal gift hampers to nearly 2.22 crore rice ration card holders across the state.
Each hamper will contain one kilogram of raw rice, sugar, and a whole sugarcane, items traditionally associated with the Pongal festival. The government has allocated Rs 248 crore for the procurement, packaging, and distribution of these essential goods.
Officials stated that the process of issuing tokens to beneficiaries will begin soon. Tokens will be distributed in advance to avoid crowding and delays at fair price shops.
Once the inauguration of the Pongal gift hamper distribution is done, the process will commence throughout the state. Sources say that Chief Minister Stalin may also make an official announcement regarding cash assistance along with the gift hampers on this occasion.
Although there is no formal confirmation yet, reports suggest a decision on cash assistance may be taken soon. In previous years, providing cash along with gift hampers was welcomed by beneficiaries, especially those from low-income groups struggling with inflation.
There is keen anticipation among ration card holders regarding a similar announcement this year. The Pongal gift scheme is viewed as a reflection of the government’s commitment to social welfare and inclusive development.
Details about the distribution schedule, eligibility, and any additional benefits are expected to be announced in the coming days.
