New Delhi, May 19: Union Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated a national seminar on “New Age Fibers – Innovation, Research, and the Road Ahead” on Tuesday. He stated that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Textile Ministry is committed to promoting New Age Fibers.
During the seminar, Singh explored various innovations and technological solutions based on New Age Fibers presented by institutions, startups, and industries.
He emphasized that by adopting new technologies, the Indian textile industry is rapidly progressing towards real development while maintaining a balance between growth and nature. This seminar brings together key stakeholders to discuss strengthening India’s textile ecosystem and future sustainable solutions.
In a media interaction, Singh noted that the world is grappling with global warming. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized solar energy upon taking office in 2014, stating that India would lead in this area. Today, we are moving in that direction. He revealed that the Textile Ministry is now working to promote New Age Fibers, responding to the global demand for sustainable fibers.
The minister mentioned that ten fibers have been selected, including milkweed, ramie, flax, sisal, natural bamboo fiber, mechanical pineapple, and banana fiber. Additionally, recycled cotton and recycled PET bottles have also been included.
Singh explained that under Modi’s government, the Textile Department has launched a concept note. This initiative collaborates with industry, researchers, and startups, aiming to produce one lakh metric tons of New Age Fibers within the next five years.
He stated that it would be remarkable for the world to see that India can provide New Age Fibers. All efforts by the Textile Department are farmer-centric, aligning with PM Modi’s theme of doubling farmers’ incomes. We are working on a waste-to-wealth policy, converting banana waste, pineapple waste, and more into fibers.
Milkweed is emerging as a revolutionary and highly beneficial fiber in the textile industry. It is environmentally friendly, fully sustainable, lightweight, comfortable, and incredibly strong, making it an excellent option for modern and future sustainable clothing.
To strengthen the entire textile sector, the Ministry of Textiles is continuously working on New Age Fibers. Special emphasis is placed on sustainable fibers like milkweed, bamboo, linen (flax), ramie, and banana. New machinery is being utilized to enhance farmers’ incomes and promote self-reliance in the country. Singh asserted that these new fibers will not only increase farmers’ incomes but also contribute to environmental protection with a lower carbon footprint.
