The Silent Killer of Sleep: How Mobile Phones Disrupt Your Rest

New Delhi, May 19: Quality sleep is essential for good health, yet mobile phones have become a significant threat. People of all ages are neglecting their sleep needs, jeopardizing their well-being. Health experts label the habit of using mobile phones before bedtime as not only a silent killer of sleep but also a root cause of various physical and mental issues.

Experts warn that a lack of quality sleep increases the risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Therefore, prioritizing sleep and distancing oneself from screens is crucial. Protecting your sleep is vital in today’s hectic lifestyle, and it can begin with small changes.

The National Health Mission (NHM) has termed this phenomenon the ‘silent killer of sleep.’ According to experts, the habit of using mobile phones before bed gradually deteriorates sleep quality, adversely affecting both body and mind. Your phone is stealing your sleep. A simple change in this habit can significantly enhance sleep quality.

The NHM notes that the habit of staring at mobile screens late into the night has become commonplace. The blue light emitted by phones suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to enter deep sleep. As a result, falling asleep becomes difficult, sleep is frequently interrupted, and waking up leads to fatigue. Over time, this habit not only disrupts sleep but can also lead to memory issues, increased irritability, stress, depression, and weakened immunity.

Experts recommend turning off mobile devices at least one hour before bedtime for better sleep. Instead, consider reading a book, listening to soft music, or practicing meditation. Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet, and try to keep your phone in another room or at a distance during the night.
