
New Delhi, May 31: A tragic incident occurred near the Saket Metro station in South Delhi, where a multi-story building collapsed, resulting in injuries to several individuals. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the JPNATC Trauma Center.
Reports indicate that a total of 13 patients were admitted to the trauma center, with five confirmed dead. After treatment, three patients were discharged, while five remain hospitalized. All affected individuals were students, including two medical graduates, two preparing for the GATE exam, and one engineer.
In response to the incident, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site on Sunday to assess the ongoing rescue and relief operations. She gathered detailed information from officials present at the scene and reviewed the rescue efforts.
Gupta received updates on the joint relief operations being conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, district administration, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Civil Defense, and other agencies. She instructed officials to ensure that no delays occur in the rescue operation and that every potentially trapped individual is searched with utmost seriousness and sensitivity.
The Chief Minister also inquired about the health status of the injured in various hospitals and directed that all injured individuals receive free and quality medical care. Following this, she met with the affected families to offer her condolences.
Describing the incident as deeply tragic and heartbreaking, Gupta assured that the Delhi government stands firmly with the affected families during this difficult time, pledging all possible financial and administrative support for the victims. She emphasized that the safety of citizens is the top priority for the Delhi government, and negligence at any level will not be tolerated.
In a swift response to the incident, a criminal case has been registered at the Mehrauli police station. Additionally, a magistrate’s inquiry has been ordered under the leadership of the South District District Magistrate to determine the actual causes of the accident and assign accountability.
Gupta reiterated that citizen safety is paramount and that any form of negligence will not be tolerated. She instructed relevant departments to conduct a thorough investigation into the reasons behind the building’s collapse. If any construction irregularities, safety standard violations, or administrative negligence are discovered, strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Furthermore, she directed officials to conduct an immediate survey and inspection of dilapidated, hazardous, and illegal buildings in Saidulajab and surrounding areas. Gupta stated that strict action must be taken against buildings posing a threat to public safety to prevent such incidents in the future.
