Chennai, June 14: The Tamil Nadu government is formulating a comprehensive policy aimed at transforming the Sivakasi fireworks industry into a major global exporter. This initiative will particularly focus on assisting local manufacturers in competing against Chinese products in international markets.
Industry Minister S. Keertana stated that the initiative will encompass boosting exports, ensuring worker safety, developing infrastructure, and implementing regulatory reforms. These measures aim to strengthen one of the state’s most significant traditional industries.
Speaking to the media, Minister Keertana noted that Sivakasi, located in the Virudhunagar district, remains the backbone of India’s fireworks sector, accounting for nearly 90 percent of the country’s total firecracker production. This industry generates over ₹6,000 crores annually and provides direct and indirect employment to thousands of workers.
However, in recent years, the sector has faced numerous challenges, including stringent regulations, safety concerns, changing market conditions, and increasing competition.
Keertana emphasized that the next major milestone for this industry will be expanding its reach in foreign markets. The proposed policy aims to significantly increase exports and establish Sivakasi as a competitive global brand in the fireworks sector.
He stated, “The goal is not only to strengthen exports but also to ensure that Sivakasi manufacturers can effectively compete with Chinese producers in international markets. This move could create new economic opportunities for the Virudhunagar district and enhance the global recognition of its products.”
As part of this initiative, the government plans to form an expert committee to recommend measures for improving factory safety and preventing industrial accidents. The committee will also suggest ways to modernize production processes and align the industry with international standards.
Minister Keertana highlighted that there will be a special emphasis on promoting the production of green crackers (environmentally friendly fireworks) and ensuring compliance with environmental and import regulations followed by various countries. Such measures are expected to increase the acceptance of Sivakasi products in foreign markets.
To support exports, the government also plans to upgrade logistics and transportation infrastructure, facilitating the safe movement of fireworks through Chennai and Tuticorin ports. Improvements in export facilities are anticipated to help manufacturers reduce logistics-related challenges.
Keertana mentioned that while a few large companies currently dominate the export market, the new policy will create opportunities for small and micro-level units to enter the international market.
Alongside boosting exports, the government will continue to prioritize the welfare and safety of workers. This approach will ensure sustainable growth for the industry and enhance the global identity of Sivakasi and Virudhunagar districts.
