Mumbai, June 14: In Paonta Sahib, located in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, devotees have expressed their concerns regarding the cleanliness and low water levels at the Yamuna Ghat. Questions have also been raised about the pace and effectiveness of the central government’s ambitious ‘Namami Gange’ project. Despite the historical and religious significance of Yamuna Ghat, devotees feel that adequate facilities are lacking.
A pilgrim who arrived from Delhi with a group shared that they came to visit the Shri Paonta Sahib Gurudwara. They praised the facilities provided by the Gurudwara management, noting that they found good accommodations and a well-organized setup. Having made prior bookings, they faced no issues. However, upon reaching the banks of the Yamuna River, they were disappointed. The pilgrim remarked that the Yamuna is not just a water body but a significant site linked to Sikh history and faith. They expressed concern over the slow progress of the ongoing works at the riverbank.
The pilgrim pointed out that the cleaning and beautification efforts along the river are moving at a sluggish pace. They emphasized that relying on just one machine is insufficient for the preservation and development of such a large river. They questioned whether the government truly prioritizes this work, suggesting that more resources and machinery should be deployed to expedite the process.
Moreover, the pilgrim stated that better arrangements for bathing and religious rituals should be established at Yamuna Ghat. They cited examples from various Gurudwaras and lakes in Delhi, where organized and safe facilities are available for devotees. Similar amenities should be developed at Yamuna Ghat in Paonta Sahib, allowing pilgrims to perform religious baths and connect with their historical and spiritual roots.
For them, the Yamuna is more than just a river; it symbolizes history and faith. This location holds special significance related to the life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the history of Paonta Sahib. Therefore, visitors wish for the ghat’s development to promote religious tourism and enhance their experiences.
The pilgrim mentioned that they had come with friends expecting to spend time at Yamuna Ghat and possibly bathe, but given the current conditions, that seems unlikely. They indicated that they would return after paying their respects at the Gurudwara Sahib, as the expected facilities at the ghat are not available.
Devotees have urged the administration and relevant departments to accelerate the ongoing works under the Namami Gange project and develop Yamuna Ghat into a clean, safe, and well-equipped religious site. They argue that Paonta Sahib is a center of faith for millions of pilgrims from across the country and abroad, and therefore, the development of basic facilities and ghats should be prioritized.
