
Srinagar, June 14: Ahead of the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra, Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat chaired a security review meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar on Sunday.
According to a police statement, the meeting aimed to assess and strengthen security arrangements for the smooth, safe, and peaceful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra.
While reviewing overall security preparations, the DGP instructed officials to remain vigilant at all times and to maintain better coordination at all levels. He emphasized the need for strict monitoring in sensitive and high-risk areas.
The DGP stressed the importance of enhanced surveillance, cordon and search operations, and regular patrolling along travel routes, railway tracks, vulnerable areas, and major tourist sites. He also directed that daily anti-sabotage checks be conducted on travel routes, ensuring a 24-hour security presence on all main roads.
To facilitate immediate assistance in emergencies, the DGP ordered the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRT) at strategic locations. He highlighted the need for extensive public awareness campaigns regarding cut-off times for pilgrims and the security arrangements made for their safety.
Nalin Prabhat called for the effective use of modern security technologies and surveillance systems, such as CCTV networks, to enhance security at all key locations, transit camps, base camps, and pilgrimage routes associated with the Yatra.
He further directed that RFID-based tracking and monitoring systems be effectively utilized to strengthen security arrangements for pilgrims and authorized vehicles, improving rapid response capabilities in emergencies.
The DGP also instructed officials to keep a close watch on terrorist collaborators and other anti-national elements, ensuring adequate security forces are deployed in remote and sensitive areas. He emphasized the need to secure all sensitive locations and high-risk areas related to the pilgrimage.
He advised the District SSP to maintain better coordination with civil administration to effectively implement security and logistics arrangements. Additionally, he instructed that skilled personnel be deployed to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims and tourists on national highways and other critical locations.
The DGP underscored the necessity for regular coordination meetings and a comprehensive contingency plan. He stated that preparedness is crucial for disaster management, emergency response, fire incidents, adverse weather, and other unforeseen situations.
During the meeting, the DGP also reviewed security preparations for the upcoming Muharram and the annual ‘Mela Kheer Bhawani.’ He instructed officials to ensure necessary security arrangements for these significant events, effectively manage crowds, and maintain better coordination with all relevant agencies.
