Chennai, February 19: In a significant political development ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has officially formed an alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday. This marks the first time since its establishment in 2005 that the DMDK has allied with the DMK.

DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakant met with Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters in Chennai to finalize the alliance. This meeting is politically crucial as it signals a new shift in the state’s electoral landscape.

After the meeting, Premalatha addressed the media, stating that the number of assembly seats allocated to the DMDK will be finalized through discussions with a committee formed by the DMK for alliance negotiations.

She mentioned, “The decision on seat distribution will be made after detailed discussions with the DMK team,” indicating that formal talks will commence soon.

CM M.K. Stalin welcomed the DMDK into the alliance, asserting that the party’s inclusion will strengthen the coalition and help ensure the continuity of DMK governance in Tamil Nadu.

Stalin posted on the social media platform ‘X’, saying, “Your arrival in the DMK alliance will contribute to the state’s development. We will continue to work together for the comprehensive development of Tamil Nadu.”

Premalatha also noted that announcements regarding positions in the upper house will be made by Stalin at an appropriate time.

She emphasized that this decision has the support of most DMDK officials, recalling that discussions about an alliance with the DMK had emerged before the 2016 assembly elections but did not materialize then.

She stated, “This should have happened in 2016. After ten years and following the passing of our founder Vijayakant, the alliance is finally taking shape.”

In recent years, the DMDK has faced electoral setbacks. In the 2021 assembly elections, it contested as part of the AMMK-led alliance but failed to win any seats. Even while allied with the AIADMK, the party did not secure any seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
