Controversy Erupts Over Book Purchase Pressure at Hardoi School

Hardoi, April 27: A controversy is brewing in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, following allegations of mistreatment by a school principal towards a mother who opposed purchasing books from the school. The District Basic Education Officer has initiated an investigation into the matter. The principal has provided her explanation regarding the incident.

The principal of New Sunbeam Public School, located near SP Tiraha, stated to reporters that on April 24, a government vaccination program was held at the school, where all children were to receive their vaccinations. During this time, Neelam, the mother, arrived and began discussing her unpaid fees. She had previously expressed her financial difficulties, leading the principal to waive some fees.

The principal claimed that Neelam and others had conspired to tarnish the school’s reputation. She noted that while most parents drop off their children and leave within five minutes, Neelam and her group stayed for three hours, allegedly plotting their actions.

District Basic Education Officer Dr. Ajit Singh spoke to a news agency, confirming that the viral video of the incident was authentic. Following this, an inspection of the school revealed several deficiencies, prompting the issuance of a notice. Further actions will be determined based on the school’s response.

Dr. Singh mentioned that initial findings indicated the school was pressuring parents to buy books from a specific shop, which will also be investigated. Those involved will face consequences.

Neelam Verma, the mother of a UKG student, recounted her experience, stating that she went to drop off her daughter and found several other parents already there. When she suggested buying the books later, the principal became angry and started shouting. The school administration later pressured her to purchase four new notebooks for approximately 1200 rupees exclusively from the school.

Neelam expressed that she felt humiliated in front of others and was threatened with her child’s name being removed from the school. Consequently, she filed a complaint through the IGRS portal to the District Magistrate regarding the entire incident.
