New Delhi, April 28: Despite ongoing tensions in West Asia, the supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG in India remains fully under control. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure fuel availability, urging citizens not to panic buy.
The government stated that, despite current circumstances, 100% supply of domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG (for transport) continues. Priority is being given to key sectors such as hospitals, educational institutions, pharmaceuticals, steel, automobiles, and agriculture for commercial LPG supply. Additionally, the supply of smaller 5 kg cylinders for migrant workers has been doubled.
To balance supply and demand, the government has implemented several measures, including increasing refinery production and extending the gas booking interval from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and from 45 days in rural areas. Alternative fuels like kerosene and coal have also been made available to ease the pressure on LPG.
According to the government, geopolitical conditions have impacted LPG supply to some extent, but domestic consumers are being prioritized. There is currently no shortage of gas anywhere in the country. Online gas bookings have surged to 99%, with approximately 93% of deliveries being made through Delivery Authentication Codes (DAC) to prevent discrepancies.
The supply of commercial LPG has also increased, with over 165,000 metric tons of gas sold in April 2026 alone. The sale of small 5 kg cylinders has risen rapidly, and awareness campaigns are informing the public about their availability.
Significant steps have also been taken to promote natural gas (PNG). A 100% gas supply is being ensured for both domestic and transport sectors, with sufficient gas being provided to fertilizers and other industries.
Since March 2026, around 552,000 new PNG connections have been activated, and infrastructure has been prepared for an additional 263,000 connections. Moreover, over 621,000 new consumers have registered. Interestingly, more than 42,600 individuals have surrendered their LPG connections after adopting PNG.
The government has directed states and union territories to monitor the supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG closely and take strict action against hoarding or black marketing. Actions are being taken under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955 and the LPG Control Order of 2000.
Control rooms and monitoring committees have been established at the district level across the country. Daily inspections and raids are being conducted, with over 1,800 raids recently carried out, resulting in several actions. Government oil companies have also imposed fines on 310 LPG distributors and suspended 71 agencies.
The government has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary purchases of petrol, diesel, and gas cylinders. Citizens are advised to disregard rumors and rely solely on official information. LPG consumers are encouraged to use digital platforms for gas bookings and avoid crowding at gas agencies. Furthermore, the government is promoting the adoption of alternative fuels such as PNG, electric, and induction cooktops to save energy.
