Himachal Pradesh Unveils Its First Green Panchayat with Solar Project Launch

Shimla, April 28: The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhu, inaugurated a 500-kilowatt solar energy project on Monday in the Dharech Gram Panchayat, located in the Kasumpati assembly constituency of Shimla district.

He highlighted that this initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable development. With this achievement, Dharech has become the first ‘Green Panchayat’ in Himachal Pradesh.

Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1.94 crore, the project commenced in January 2025 and was successfully connected to the power grid on March 30, 2026.

The Chief Minister stated that this solar power plant generates approximately 3,000 units of clean energy daily, with an estimated annual output of around eight lakh units.

According to the agreement, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited will purchase this electricity at a rate of ₹3.50 per unit. This is expected to provide the Gram Panchayat with a stable annual income of about ₹28 lakh, strengthening its financial stability.

Sukhu emphasized that this initiative represents an inclusive and welfare-oriented model that will enhance rural self-reliance. The income generated from this project will be distributed equitably: 30% for the development works of the Gram Panchayat, 20% for the welfare of orphans and widows, 20% to the state government, 10% to Himurja, and the remaining 20% for the operation and maintenance of Himurja.

He noted that with an estimated lifespan of 25 years, this project is a crucial step towards promoting sustainable development, clean energy, and rural empowerment in the state. An official statement from the state government indicated that this initiative will directly benefit local residents and help improve their economic conditions.
