Cairo, February 23: The United States and Iran have decided to continue their negotiations. However, both sides hold vastly different views on the nuclear deal and America’s significant military preparations. The situation between the two countries remains extremely delicate.
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi announced on Sunday that the next round of US-Iran talks is scheduled for Thursday in Geneva. He expressed his satisfaction on social media platform X, stating, “I am pleased to confirm that the US-Iran talks are now set for this Thursday in Geneva, aiming for positive progress towards finalizing the deal.”
According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, Iranian Foreign Minister Sayyid Abbas Araghchi and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi had a phone conversation on Sunday. During this discussion, both leaders emphasized the importance of “constructive engagement and dialogue” to achieve a sustainable nuclear agreement.
Earlier, in an interview with MSNBC, Araghchi mentioned that Tehran would prepare a draft for a potential nuclear deal within two to three days and present it to the US delegation. In a CBS News interview, he reiterated Tehran’s willingness to resolve its differences with Washington through dialogue.
Araghchi indicated that he might meet with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Biegun, in Geneva on Thursday. He suggested that diplomatic solutions between Iran and the US are still possible. Both parties are working on the components of a potential deal, and discussions on the initial draft could take place on Thursday.
He stated that the deal should include Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and the lifting of US sanctions, ensuring Tehran’s right to enrich uranium under its national nuclear program. Araghchi believes that Iran and the US can negotiate a better nuclear agreement than the one signed in 2015 between Tehran and world powers. He noted that previous discussions involved extensive details, but this time, a focus on fundamental agreements would suffice to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful.
He also emphasized that if the US attacks Iran, Tehran has the right to defend itself. “We know we must target US bases in the region,” he said.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on social media on Sunday, stating, “Iran is committed to peace and stability in the region. Recent discussions have yielded practical proposals and positive signals, although we are closely monitoring US actions and have made all necessary preparations for any potential situation.”
A senior Iranian official, speaking anonymously, stated, “Both sides need to reach a logical timetable for lifting sanctions.” Washington has indicated that any agreement with Iran must include bans on uranium enrichment, the removal of its enriched elements, limits on long-range missiles, and a withdrawal of support for regional proxies. Analysts suggest that such conditions may be challenging for Iran to accept.
Media reports indicate that the US has recently deployed a significant number of fighter jets and transport aircraft at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which is considerably more than the base’s usual deployment. Located about 100 kilometers northeast of the Jordanian capital Amman, Muwaffaq Salti is considered one of the US’s main military bases in the Middle East. Reports of increased military deployments have also emerged from other US military bases in the region.
Two rounds of indirect nuclear talks have already taken place between the two sides, with the first meeting occurring on February 6 in Muscat and the second on February 17 in Geneva.
