Kolkata, June 22: The debate over renaming streets in West Bengal has intensified once again. This comes after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remarked that some old names reflect historical contexts tied to violence, bloodshed, and patriotism. Leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have shared their views on the matter.
TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh responded to the Chief Minister’s comments, stating that it is a matter of perspective. He noted, “If a name has a negative aspect associated with its history, it cannot be supported. However, it is also essential to recognize that such names are part of our history and past. The government has the right to change names, but the attempt to completely rewrite history can be viewed differently by various people.”
Regarding the proposal to rename Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road, Ghosh commented, “Changing the name of a street is not unusual, but when a historical name is entirely replaced, we must consider the broader implications. Every name carries historical and social significance that needs to be understood. The old name had its historical importance, while the new name should also be respected.” He emphasized that such decisions should be made thoughtfully and with a comprehensive perspective.
TMC MLA Madan Mitra also shared his opinion on the issue. He stated, “According to municipal regulations, names have often been changed that were linked to specific areas. However, changing names of roads already named after individuals may present a different situation. If the government has made a decision, it will be respected, but rules and traditions should also be considered in such matters.”
Meanwhile, Mitra addressed reports regarding the alleged freezing of the Trinamool Congress’s bank accounts. He remarked, “The party is not particularly concerned about this issue. Payments to those who were owed have already been made, and the party continues its operations as usual.”
