PV Sindhu Reflects on BWF World Championship Exit: I Should Have Been More Patient

New Delhi, August 20: PV Sindhu’s journey in the BWF World Championship came to an end on Thursday. In the women’s singles round of 16, she was defeated by China’s Wang Zhi Yi with scores of 21-11, 15-21, 21-17. Sindhu appeared disappointed with her performance and stated that she needed to exercise more patience.

In a conversation with reporters, Sindhu remarked, “I don’t know if she was injured or if it was part of her strategy. However, I believe I should have converted this match into a win. The rallies were long, and at 17-17, every point mattered. I think I needed to be a bit more patient.” During the match, Wang Zhi Yi frequently sat on the court due to pain, causing several interruptions.

The Indian star shuttler added, “Yes, losing a match like this is very disheartening. After training and working hard for so long, it truly hurts to lose matches like this. However, I understand that this is part of the sport. You become stronger and make a great comeback. You also learn from the mistakes made in such matches. What’s done is done. Now, it’s time to go back and do what’s necessary.”

Sindhu expressed that she made every effort to win the match, but the outcome was not in her favor. “Absolutely, I feel that I gave it my all this time, but ultimately, there is only one winner. However, I will keep trying. I believe I played my best, and while there were long rallies, there wasn’t much I could change. Perhaps I could have played a bit differently, and I should have been more patient. Right now, I can only focus on what was most important in this game.”

Wang Zhi Yi, who secured the victory against Sindhu, commented, “Yes, today’s match was very challenging. I think she (Sindhu) is a very strong player, and her attacks are very quick. I just tried to move her around in the long rallies. I’m happy that my game plan worked.”

Discussing her injury during the match, Wang Zhi Yi said, “I think it affected my movement and speed a bit, but at that moment, I didn’t think much about it. As long as I could move around, I wasn’t going to give up on any shot. I will get treatment, massages, or whatever is necessary. I will focus on my recovery and be ready for tomorrow’s match.”

Sindhu commented on Wang Zhi’s injury, suggesting it might have been part of her strategy. In response, the Chinese player said, “I can understand why she might think that, but I genuinely experienced cramps on the court, and obviously, I think that affected her as well. Perhaps her thinking changed.”
