Beijing, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : China has stepped up its support for Nepal by providing vital climate monitoring and forecasting products. This initiative follows a serious landslide incident at the Chiylong-Rasuwagadhi port, located on the China-Nepal border. The Chinese National Meteorological Administration (CMA) reported on September 10 that the National Climate Center has launched an emergency response to assist Nepal.
Utilizing its smart weather forecasting program, ‘Mazu,’ the center has delivered customized climate products tailored for Nepal. These offerings include continuous climate analysis and extended forecasts for the affected areas, aimed at bolstering relief efforts.
Under the coordinated guidance of the CMA, the National Climate Center has provided Nepal with products in two main categories: climate monitoring and climate forecasting. For climate monitoring, the center has developed five types of daily monitoring products, which cover temperature, rainfall, and soil drought conditions. Additionally, it has produced ten climate index products, including data on El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).
In terms of climate forecasting, the center has made available daily temperature and rainfall forecasts for the next 60 days, based on its AI-driven climate forecasting model, ‘Fangshun.’ It has also provided predictions for significant climate events, such as ENSO and MJO.
Moreover, the National Climate Center has assumed the role of a regional climate center for the ‘Third Pole,’ offering regular forecasts of extended climate trends tailored to Nepal’s needs. This support is expected to enhance the ongoing relief operations in Nepal by providing crucial weather-related information.
