Mumbai, August 20: In Maharashtra, commercial passenger vehicle drivers are now required to have practical knowledge of Marathi to effectively communicate with passengers. This new regulation was announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who also stated that an inspection campaign commenced statewide on Thursday to enforce this rule.
During the inspections, drivers lacking proficiency in practical Marathi will receive notices and must learn the language within a month. Failure to comply will result in a three-month suspension of their driving badge.
On Thursday, inspections in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region evaluated 3,995 drivers, revealing that 604 did not possess adequate knowledge of practical Marathi. Notices have been issued to all of these drivers. Statewide data indicates that 4,222 drivers have been inspected so far, with 664 receiving notices.
Minister Sarnaik emphasized that knowing practical Marathi is not merely a regulatory requirement but is also crucial for the convenience and safety of passengers. He assured that drivers would be given ample time to learn the language. However, strict actions will be taken against those who fail to comply after the deadline.
The inspection campaign is set to continue until September 30, 2026. During this period, drivers’ knowledge of practical Marathi will be tested. Those who do not meet the requirements will be given a chance to improve, but non-compliance after the stipulated time will lead to badge suspension.
