New Delhi, August 21: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has unveiled the ‘Delhi Master Plan 2047’ aimed at transforming India’s national capital into a developed metropolis by the year 2047. According to DDA Vice Chairman N. Saravanan Kumar, this initiative will enhance the quality of life for Delhi residents, providing improved housing, transportation, and recreational facilities.
Kumar stated, “Life in Delhi will become easier, with better amenities for residents. The transportation network, including metro and bus services, will be significantly upgraded. There will be more parks and public facilities. Those living in slums will see an improvement in their lifestyle, as the government plans to provide them with flats through public-private partnerships. Provisions for redevelopment for orphans are also included.”
The plan also promotes the redevelopment of older homes. Kumar explained, “If a building is 40-50 years old and residents wish to construct a new one, it will be encouraged. For example, a building with 200 flats can be replaced with a new one that accommodates 300 flats. Such provisions have been made to improve housing arrangements for the general public in Delhi.”
Minister Ashish Sood emphasized that the Master Plan 2047 aims to address two major issues in the city: pollution and traffic congestion. He stated, “This is a plan to create a developed capital for a developed India. It includes measures to tackle pollution and reduce traffic. New housing developments will be organized through Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and land pooling.”
TOD encourages dense populations and business activities around metro and bus corridors, minimizing the need for long commutes for daily tasks. In land pooling, landowners give their land to the government in exchange for a portion of the developed land. This approach allows for the creation of new housing and infrastructure without displacing residents.
DDA officials assert that the goal of the Master Plan 2047 is not merely to construct buildings but to create a livable, green, and connected city. The plan prioritizes parks, open spaces, public amenities, and environmental conservation.
Overall, the government views the ‘Delhi Master Plan 2047’ as a long-term vision that will radically transform the capital over the next two decades. Improved housing, faster transportation, reduced pollution, and increased greenery are the main pillars of this initiative.
