Political Turmoil in Maharashtra: Majid Memon Warns Against Undermining Democracy

Mumbai, June 18: The political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up as several MPs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) are reportedly in contact with the Shinde faction. Senior advocate and former MP Majid Memon has described these developments as a serious warning for the democratic system.

In a recent conversation, Memon stated, “The events unfolding in our democratic system are extremely concerning. First, parties were broken through ‘Operation Lotus,’ and now we are witnessing new names like ‘Operation Tiger.’ The BJP has worked to dismantle the Shiv Sena through the Shinde faction, following similar tactics against the Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress. Now, attempts are being made to fracture the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. It seems that some leaders of the NDA are intent on weakening democratic India. If this trend continues, our democratic framework will be completely dismantled.”

Commenting on the internal strife within Shiv Sena (UBT), Memon shared his views on the credibility of leaders aligned with Uddhav Thackeray. He remarked, “I have worked closely with Uddhav Thackeray for a long time and know many leaders personally. I believe that Sanjay Raut is extremely loyal to Uddhav and will never abandon him. Leaders like Arvind Sawant and Anil Desai will also stand by Uddhav despite any turmoil. However, the six MPs currently under suspicion are either being tempted by money or threatened with the opening of files against them. This is unfortunate.”

Addressing claims of a potential split in the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, Memon responded sharply. “CM Yogi and Prime Minister Modi will never admit to having broken any party. They will merely state that some MPs or MLAs are in contact with them. The reality is that people are being coerced through pressure, fear, and threats. Time will tell if Akhilesh Yadav can keep his MPs and MLAs united. If the same pattern repeats in Uttar Pradesh as it did with the AAP, TMC, and Shiv Sena, it will not bode well for democracy.”

Regarding the recent meeting between Prime Minister Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, Memon commented, “It is a positive thing when our Prime Minister is praised anywhere. It is heartening that a major country like the U.S. has expressed support for India, stating that they will stand by us if we are attacked. However, the Trump administration should lift some restrictions imposed on India, particularly regarding oil purchases from Russia. This would be in India’s best interest.”

Memon also referenced PM Modi’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying, “It is commendable that PM Modi is working to improve international relations. We wish for India’s global image to enhance and for our relations with other countries to strengthen. However, a question arises: why is PM Modi turning a blind eye to the issues at home? Why does he remain silent on serious problems like paper leaks and unemployment? He should focus on domestic issues alongside foreign policy.”
