Paris, June 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed optimism for peace and stability in West Asia following a recent agreement between the United States and Iran. During the G7 summit held in Evian, France, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that Modi raised the crucial issue of maritime security in his discussions with other world leaders.
Misri emphasized that India has consistently advocated for the freedom of navigation in international maritime routes and the uninterrupted flow of trade. The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the importance of maritime personnel’s safety.
He noted that millions of Indian maritime workers play a vital role in facilitating global trade through their services on ships worldwide. Therefore, their safety is a shared concern not just for India, but for the entire world. Modi reiterated this point during his address at the G7 summit and in several bilateral meetings with global leaders.
The Foreign Secretary also mentioned that Modi reaffirmed India’s desire for lasting peace and security in West Asia during discussions with world leaders. He indicated that India views the new agreement between the U.S. and Iran positively and hopes for a swift return to peace and stability in the region.
India was invited as a partner country to the 52nd G7 summit, marking its 13th participation in the event and Modi’s seventh consecutive attendance.
Misri reported that significant progress has been made regarding the interim free trade agreement between India and the U.S. He stated that they are very close to finalizing this agreement. Next week, U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer will visit India to advance these discussions. This topic was a key focus during the bilateral meeting between Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump in Evian.
