Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Thursday clarified that no decision has yet been taken regarding the formation of a new political party to contest elections. He appealed to party workers and the public not to be misled by rumours.
Speaking to reporters after a closed-door consultative meeting with party administrators in Theni district, Panneerselvam said discussions are ongoing and the final stance will be clear only after understanding the sentiments of grassroots workers.
The meeting was held at his farmhouse near Periakulam in Kailasapatti, attended by administrators from Theni town, union-level units, and various party cells. Panneerselvam stated, “We have not yet decided whether to contest elections as an independent party. Spreading unnecessary confusion among people at this stage will only weaken the movement.”
He reiterated that his priority remains the legal restoration of rights for All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) workers.
“We are fighting a legal battle in court to protect AIADMK cadre rights. This struggle will continue until justice is served,” he added.
Referring to his previous electoral contest in Ramanathapuram, Panneerselvam explained that his decision to contest was aimed at assessing support among party workers. He alleged that six candidates were fielded under his name as part of a fabricated political move.
“We are legally challenging these attempts, and the fight will persist until the legitimate rights of AIADMK workers are restored,” he said.
Highlighting the political legacy of Theni district, Panneerselvam noted that it has produced great Chief Ministers like M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa and remains a stronghold of AIADMK.
“Our appeal is simple: all those loyal to AIADMK’s ideology should unite under one banner. This consultative meeting was organised to understand the aspirations of the people of Theni district,” he added.
When asked about T.T.V. Dhinakaran’s interest in joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Panneerselvam said that Dhinakaran is keen on joining both NDA and AIADMK.
“I am also ready for this, but this willingness should also be considered by my dear brother Edappadi K. Palaniswami,” he commented.
