Kolkata, June 13: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into the high-profile municipal recruitment scandal in West Bengal. Raids have been conducted at seven locations linked to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and former minister Madan Mitra. According to ED sources, a team from the Kolkata zone initiated a simultaneous search operation today.
This case revolves around allegations of accepting millions in bribes in exchange for jobs in various municipalities.
Preliminary findings indicate that Madan Mitra received bribes in cash and gold through intermediaries for illegal appointments in several municipalities, including the Kamarhati Municipality. Reports suggest that he is directly linked to over 125 illegal appointments, which involved placing unqualified candidates in jobs.
The ED team is currently examining documents, digital devices, and other evidence collected from these locations. The investigation is ongoing.
The ED first became aware of this notorious municipal recruitment scandal while probing a money laundering case related to the West Bengal school recruitment scam. During the investigation, several crucial documents and pieces of information emerged, leading to the unraveling of the municipal recruitment scandal.
Subsequently, following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also launched a parallel inquiry into the ‘cash for municipal jobs’ case. As officials from both central agencies advanced their investigations, names of several politically influential figures, including state ministers and leaders from the ruling party, began to surface.
